What is Athletic Therapy?

While you might typically regard Athletic Therapists as those individuals you see at your child’s hockey or soccer games taping ankles and providing First Aid, the field of Athletic Therapy is much more.   In many ways, Athletic Therapy is similar to Physiotherapy.  Athletic Therapy is a health care profession that specializes in the prevention, assessment and care of musculoskeletal disorders (muscles, bones, joints) especially as they relate to athletics and the pursuit of physical activity.

Athletic therapists also adhere to the Sports Medicine Model of care. We treat a wide range of patients, from kids with concussions to seniors recovering from hip replacement surgery, using various manual therapies, modalities, exercise prescription and even bracing and taping. The treatment varies but the objective doesn’t: an Athletic Therapist’s goal is to help you return to your usual activities, whether that means playing competitive sports or simply walking to the mailbox and back.

More specifically this includes:

1. Assessment

I will formulate an Athletic Therapy diagnosis by interpreting the mechanism of injury; determining signs, symptoms and predisposing factors of an injury, illness or health related condition; performing specific physical, orthopedic or fitness testing in accordance with accepted procedures to assess an injury, illness and/or health related condition.

I assess for/recognize the potential of a sport related traumatic brain injury/concussion.

I determine the biomechanical impact of injury, illness or health-related condition to promote ergonomically correct function.

Finally, I also reassess the status of injuries, illnesses and/or health-related conditions using standard techniques and documentation to determine appropriate treatment, rehabilitation and/or fitness and reconditioning plans.

2. Intervention

Similar to physiotherapy, I will engage you in rehabilitative treatment (including electrical, thermal and mechanical modalities) using standard techniques and procedures to facilitate recovery, function and/or performance.

I incorporate therapeutic and conditioning exercise(s) using both standard and advanced techniques and procedures to facilitate recovery, function and/or performance either pre- or post-injury or surgical intervention, as well as for general illnesses or conditions related to the musculoskeletal system.

I educate you and provide guidance and/or counseling in the treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning of injuries, illnesses and/or health-related conditions to facilitate recovery, function and/or performance.

Lastly, I assist you with appropriate return protocols from sport related traumatic brain injuries.

Conditions treated with Athletic Therapy include:

  • Neck and Low Back sprains/strains
  • Ligament sprains/ Muscle-tendon strains/ Tears
  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy
  • Lateral/medial epicondylosis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis / Achilles tendinitis
  • Shin splints
  • Patellofemoral disorders
  • And more!

My goal for you is simple: to provide you with the information you need so you can feel, move, perform and live better.
